The purple route, for example, is 5.5 kilometers long and leads to the village of Holten and back again. Among other things, you will pass by the Canadian cemetery.

Pieterpad route through Holten

The famous Pieterpad stretches from the north in Groningen to the Sint Pietersberg in Maastricht. One of the 26 routes leads through Holten.
The twelfth stage leads from Holten to Laren. The easiest way is to park the car in Laren (the end point) and take the train to Holten station, this is also the starting point of the route. A beautiful route through forests and meadows. The end point of this hike is in the middle of Laren.

The Borkeld

De Borkeld is a nature reserve in Rijssen-Holten. The nature reserve De Borkeld consists of young forest, large heaths, clay pits, fields, grasslands and even a piece of raised bog.  Here you will find the largest juniper thicket in the Netherlands. The terrain is sloping: the highest peak, the Friezenberg, is forty meters away. Near Holten there is an information point of the forestry authority at Borkeldweg number 17.

History of Borkeld

13,000 years ago, hunter-gatherers were already active here. The evidence was left by them in the form of stone axes, skin scrapers and other stone tools. The prehistoric burial mounds and settlement sites that have been found are between 6,000 and 4,000 years old, and the special natural value of the juniper field has been taken into account in some cases by conservationists. Source: Wikipedia
